10 Unexpectedly Intense Performances In Horror Movies

6. Emily Blunt - A Quiet Place

The Babadook
Paramount Pictures

A Quiet Place is set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by aliens with hyper-sensitive hearing, with the story revolves around the Abbot family - Lee, his pregnant wife Evelyn, and their children Regan and Marcus - as they're forced to live in silence.

The cast had a tough job here since they had to invoke fear, anger, joy, sadness, and love without uttering a single word. Although the actors are fantastic, the clear standout is Emily Blunt, who portrays Evelyn. The Devil Wears Prada star is remarkable throughout, showcasing multiple facets of her complex character through her body language and facial expressions.

However, Blunt's defining moment is the childbirth sequence.

While going into labour, Evelyn steps on an upright nail, alerting one of the monsters to her presence. Even though the baby is coming any minute, the Abbot family matriarch is forced to remain completely still and silent while the creature hunts for her. After dragging herself into the bathtub, the baby breaches, causing Evelyn to endure unimaginable pain. As the child is born, Evelyn cannot hold it any longer, letting out an agonising scream.

The fact that Emily Blunt was able to flawlessly elicit such a wide range of emotions without speaking during this heart-thumping sequence is a testimony of her talents.
