10 Most Unexpectedly Tragic Endings To Otherwise Fun Movies

8. Alfie (1966)

Ask anybody to think about 1966's Alfie, and they'll usually recall Michael Caine chatting up beautiful women and strolling around London like a "proper geezer" - and for much of this classic flick, that's exactly what happens. But there's far more weight inherent to Alfie than many seem to remember - this movie has a dark and rather disturbing abortion storyline, after all, and although the storyline flirts with the idea of glorifying Alfie's care free and promiscuous lifestyle towards the beginning of the flick, the ending goes in the opposite direction. Because when all's said and done here, Alfie gets a taste of his medicine when his American lover (Shelley Winters) chooses another man of him. He's left alone, and the suddenly realisation sets in: Alfie, contrary to his attitude, is actually a rather lonely man. The ending of the movie chooses to emphasis the character's loneliness in a fairly heartbreaking scene on a dark London bridge, where our hero's only friend looks to be a stray dog.At this point, Cilla Black's melancholic track "Alfie" eases in, as she laments: What's it all about, Alfie?" Who knows?
