10 Unforgettable Character Introductions In Movies
1. Darth Vader - Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
You remember Darth Vader’s introduction in A New Hope, where he immediately asserted his strength, dominance and superiority by choking a Rebel to death? Well, now that you’re fondly reminiscing about that brilliant entrance, think about all the younglings in 2006 whose first time seeing the celebrated baddie was him screaming “no”.
At first, the scene does capture the tragedy of the transformation with Anakin's beating heart replaced with Vader's breathing and Palpatine lying in his ear that he murdered his pregnant lover in rage. Then it’s all ruined with Vader becoming a cartoon character as he breaks free of his cuffs and bellows the infamous and melodramatic “no” while the camera pulls back.
Not only is it one of cinema’s worst clichés and a prime example of why George Lucas is a terrible screenwriter, but it ruins the transition from Anakin to Vader that the prequels were made for the sole purpose of showing; once the mask is on, Anakin should no longer be the crybaby whimp we have had to tolerate for three movies, but the very first thing he does as Vader is whine.
Unforgettable for all the wrong reasons, the goodbye to Anakin and the hello to Darth Vader in Revenge Of The Sith is a painfully silly moment that spoils the only decent prequel and the birth of one of cinema’s greatest bad guys.
