10 Unforgettable Character Introductions In Movies
8. Belle - Beauty And The Beast (1991)
The original animation's introduction to the iconic bookworm is one of the most memorable musical sequences in Disney history. The animation is
also bright and vibrant, and Paige O’ Hara’s soaring vocals makes the sequence
of sporadic singing particularly pleasant.
And crucially, it quickly establishes the captivating personalities of both Belle and the town through wit. None of the villagers share the remake’s bitter tone, and the way in which they all watch and sing with Belle in wonder, delight and envy makes her more admirable and head-turning, and it makes the townsfolk like the baker, the “bonjour” greeting men and the blonde triplets all memorable as they’re fun to listen to and watch.
Unlike the remake which removed all joy and charm in a misguided effort to make its politicised message stronger and more overt, the original is an unforgettable example of how a musical sequence should introduce and establish its leading character’s heart and mind, as well as the film’s theme and tone.
