Genres: Sci-Fi/Horror/Thriller

Sci-fi and horror are a well used in filmmaking, preferably within the constrains of a small budgetary in indiefilm. They are also a perfect mix when it comes to surprising your audience and go a bit mental at times and really encourage the filmmaker to push himself creatively.

Tasya Vos, played by the ever excellent Andrea Riseborough, is an elite, corporate assassin, takes control of other people's bodies using brain-implant technology to execute high-profile targets. While it is not only incredibly creepy to merge your conscious with that of a stranger, it is also flat-out wrong, something that never really comes up in the movie, but plays out in your own mind while watching.

There are so many sci-fi / horror mergers, we would need a top 100 to get the best ones, but since we focus on 2020’s genre-benders, Brandon Cronenberg’s POSSESSOR can’t be a miss.

In his follow-up to “Antiviral” he presents this bizarre body-swap that reminiscent of the crazy-enjoyable oddball that is “The Cell”.

There are not many movies out there as brave as this, but you’ll crave more of this craziness once you sat down with your popcorn. And while this is certainly a high stake from the son of the great and gory David Cronenberg, Brendan delivered mostly when it comes to gore, and could haven even gone a few steps further into the horror direction, to keep it balanced with the overall sci-fi tone. POSSESSOR mostly intertwines both elements neatly without swaying too much in undefined territory. And it certainly helps that Andrea Riseborough is once again simply mesmerising.
