10 Unmade Comic Book Movies That Could Have Been Awesome
6. Batman Beyond
Over fifteen years after it went off the air, Batman Beyond still remains a fan-favorite interpretation of the Dark Knight. When looking for a way to reboot the franchise in the wake of Batman & Robin at the turn of the 21st Century, Warner Bros. briefly flirted with the idea before deciding that a futuristic, cyberpunk version of the Caped Crusader was a little too risky.
A live-action Batman Beyond was officially announced in August 2000, with series co-creators Paul Dini and Alan Burnett writing the screenplay and Boaz Yakin set to direct. After a year in development, the project was put on hold indefinitely as the studio decided to focus their efforts on a more straightforward reboot instead, which ultimately led to Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins.
Even though it never got past the script stage, Batman Beyond remains a tantalizing 'what if?' prospect. The character needed a fresh spin in the post-Schumacher age, and it doesn't come much fresher than Terry McGinnis donning the cape and cowl under the tutelage of octogenarian Bruce Wayne set to the backdrop of 2040 Neo-Gotham. Imagine the best parts of The Matrix crossed with Batman Begins and you get an idea of the awesome potential that it had.
