10 Unmade Guillermo Del Toro Projects That Look Awesome

7. The Haunted Mansion

The first attempt to adapt The Haunted Mansion to film sucked. Guillermo del Toro apparently took his kids to see the Eddie Murphy vehicle (which hoped to capitalise on Disney's success at adapting their Pirates Of The Caribbean theme park attraction to film) and, all in all, he found it failed in both being funny and being scary. So he decided to pitch his own version. Amazingly, Disney said yes, and he set to developing his own version of The Haunted Mansion, delving into the mythology of the Disneyland attraction itself which has all manner of spooky, real-life stories haunting it. The cornerstone of del Toro's version was the Hatbox Ghost, a part of the ride which was never implemented and has an eerie standing in Disneyland lore. Announced at Comic-Con in 2010, del Toro promised €œwe are not making it a comedy. We are making it scary and fun at the same time, but the scary will be scary.€ And anybody who has seen basically any del Toro film knows he can do scary. Perhaps too scary, which is why little has been heard since about the project, except that Ryan Gosling might be interested in starring.
