10 Unnecessary But Annoyingly Successful Film Sequels

1. Back to the Future: Part II (1989)

Let's think back to the ending of Back to the Future for a second. Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), after successfully bringing his parents together in the 1950s again to ensure that his family are even created in the first place, is standing outside his house with his new car and his girlfriend, Jennifer (Claudia Wells). It's the perfect end to an almost-perfect movie. Then, in steps Doc Brown. I love the Back to the Future franchise, I really do. But the sequels really didn't need to happen. Theoretically, I can understand why they did, considering all of the possibilities that time travel provides. The scene with Doc Brown at the end of the first instalment really did feel like it was forced in at the end to set up a sequel, which is probably exactly what it was. The conclusion didn't call for that to happen, as the story had already been told. Whilst Back to the Future: Part II was a great movie and even explored the premise of the original in a slightly different way, it just didn't need to happen. I'm just glad that Part II, grossing $331,950,002 worldwide, didn't lead to more than one sequel after that, otherwise it really would have killed the franchise. Ultimately, if it had been left as it was, then I would have been content with the conclusion to the story.
