10 Unpopular Movie Opinions (And How To Justify Them)
2. Ben Affleck Is The Best Batman
As much as DC fans quite rightly loathe Batman V Superman and Justice League, there's one aspect of the film which stands beyond reproach: Ben Affleck's tenacious work in the role of Bruce Wayne, and more specifically, Batman.
Though Affleck's performance in Justice League was compromised somewhat by re-shoots - causing his physical appearance to change markedly between scenes - BvS in particular was fantastic proof of just how well-cast Affleck was as the Caped Crusader.
Affleck's grizzled, middle-aged appearance fed perfectly into the role of a tired, aging superhero, and though you can certainly argue that Michael Keaton and Christian Bale gave us richer Bruce Waynes, Affleck's Batman remains the one to beat.
Free of Keaton's goofy physicality and Bale's ridiculous vocal growl, Affleck makes The Dark Knight truly intense for the first time in a movie. The iconic warehouse sequence from BvS, for instance, is probably the single best movie scene featuring any iteration of Batman.
The hand-wringing over Batman's murderous habits is understandable, but it's important to appreciate the context of where this version of Batman is in his life.
And moreover, it does little to compromise Affleck's portrayal, which from his perfect chin to his hench build, awesome suit and incredible Bat-voice, is everything the character has always deserved to be.
It sadly doesn't seem likely we'll get to see Affleck in the Batsuit again, and though we'll never know exactly how great he could've been in Matt Reeves' planned solo movie, he at least proved his many doubters wrong by delivering the best movie Batman to date.
