10 Unusual Film Roles That Helped Actors Avoid Being Typecast

7. Amy Adams - The Fighter

Amy Adams is made of sugar and spice and everything nice, right? Well, that's how her filmography read for a long time, anyway. The live action Disney fairytale Enchanted was the movie that first put her on the map and cemented her reputation as a sweet, naive ingenue. She sang her way through Manhattan, fluttering on about love and happiness, and getting cockroaches to clean her apartment. But even when she wasn't playing the literal Disney princess, she was still...sort of playing that role. She does Junebug, and she plays a sweet, bubbly pregnant woman. She acts in Doubt, a film about child molestation, and plays a wide-eyed, innocent nun. She kind of cornered the market on that type of role for a while. The Fighter was really the film that helped her break away and show a little bit of edge. She played the tough, bar-tending girlfriend of Mark Wahlberg's boxer, and it was actually totally believable. Because somehow she managed to avoid the caricature of the rough-and-tumble bar lady, and created instead a woman who was strong and unwilling to put up with crap from anyone.
