There are plenty of examples that show studios rushing similar projects into development at the same time; it gave us Armageddon vs Deep Impact, Antz vs A Bug's Life, White House Down vs Olympus Has Fallen and many more. No project will face a tougher uphill battle than Andy Serkis' Jungle Book, which finds itself in the unfortunate position of most people not even knowing it exists but still coming out too soon after Disney's 2016 smash hit.

Jon Favreau's Jungle Book was well-received by critics and audiences last year, earning $966.6m at the box office and winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, continuing Disney's winning streak of updating their back catalogue of animated classics. Serkis was announced as director of the rival project as far back as March 2014 and it started shooting a year later. Since then, very little has been heard besides the initial release date getting pushed back two years to October 2018.

Serkis has claimed his movie will be different to Disney's by taking a more mature approach and incorporating more elements from the source material. However, the sad fact remains that Disney have beaten him to the punch and created the definitive big screen version of the Jungle Book for an entire generation, and unless the marketing campaign does something spectacular it will likely just be viewed as an inferior knock-off by the time it finally gets to theaters.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
