10 Upcoming DC Movies And The Comics They'll Adapt
1. The New Gods
Comics: Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus by Jack Kirby & Mister Miracle by Tom King & Mitch Gerads
The New Gods movie is probably the film you should be looking forward to the most, because Jack Kirby’s original Fourth World saga is a phenomenal cosmic opera that, if it were his only creation, would still merit Jack Kirby being called the King of Comics.
Orion, High Father, Lightray, Bug, Darkseid, Granny Goodness, The Furies, Big Barda, and Mister Miracle are such fantastic characters that they, like Green Lantern, could surpass Star Wars in popularity if handled correctly. Speaking of Big Barda and Mister Miracle.
2017 saw the arrival of the Mister Miracle 12 issue series written by Tom King, but unlike Jack Kirby’s original series, that saw Mister Miracle act as a more traditional superhero, King’s series sees Scott Free in a much more human and relatable light, and that description does not do the series justice. Seriously, read Mister Miracle by Tom King and Mitch Gerads, you don’t even need to read Jack Kirby’s original run on the character for the series to leave you weeping tears of joy. It’s that damn beautiful.
But getting back to the topic at hand, the reason Warner Bros. and DC would choose to use these two specific runs as inspiration for their upcoming movie is because of how iconic they are. 2017’s Mister Miracle series is the most recent use of the character and deservedly won an Eisner for how incredible it is, also Tom King is helping to write the New Gods movie at the time of writing this article, and Jack Kirby’s original creation is the basis for all this.
There are no other series or one shot that Warner Bros. and DC would look to for inspiration because they already have the perfect ones to look too. Both Kirby’s and King’s work would make for vastly different yet still incredible films, and it's hard to imagine just how beautiful a blending of the two would look as a movie.
