The Anime:

Based on Tow Ubukata's critically acclaimed series of novels, Mardock Scramble is the story of Rune Balot, a prostitute left for dead after being caught up in a gangland explosion. Rune's battered body is discovered by a man named Dr. Easter, who saves her life by turning her into a cyborg and training her to use the advanced technology to defend herself - something that comes in handy when ex-employers come calling.

What We Know:

Advertising agency Dentsu and Hayakawa Publishing Corp struck a deal for the rights to live-action remakes of a number of Japanese sci-fi novels back in 2012, one of which was Mardock Scramble. Shoot 'Em Up director Michael Davis has been attached to the project since, though editor of Hayakawa's SF magazine Yoshihiro Shiozawa has stressed that nothing has been given the green light as of yet.

Will It Work?

Fortunately for the powers that be in Hollywood, Ubukata's writing has already been neatly arranged into three movies by anime distributors Aniplex. Mardock Scramble: The First Compression was released in 2010, with sequels The Second Combustion and The Third Exhaust coming in 2011 and 2012 respectively, providing producers with a blueprint to work from.

If they follow it correctly then Rune Balot could quite easily become the most bad-ass vengeful female since Tarantino's Beatrix Kiddo.
