6. Ghost In The Shell
Ghost In The Shell, like Memento before it, is one of the least necessary remake opportunities currently in the works. It's like trying to make Akira, which... oh, wait. Forget for a moment that the plan - to remake the animated Japanese film as a live-action flick with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role - is all kinds of wrong, but that the source material is so complex and so dense in its existing format that a dumbed-down Hollywood version is only going to inspire cries of: "Oh, God, what have they done?" There is much to be said about the upcoming Rupert Sanders film and its associated whitewashing of an Asian role (yes: it has a director, too, and Johansson is firmly on board - assumedly so she can continue her reign as the de facto geek fantasy girl), but the most important question, ultimately, is... why? What good can a live-action remake bring to something that is already so perfectly, beautifully rendered in its animated form? It is entirely necessary that, somehow, fans of the original masterpiece bring this production to its knees before it has a chance of manifesting. Everyone - let's start a petition!
