After the critical and commercial acclaim that greeted Creed, along with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, it almost looked as though Sylvester Stallone was ready to step away from the action genre and enter a new late-career phase as a grizzled character actor after his 70th birthday.

Obviously that turned out not to be the case, because having recently brought Rambo back to the screen for his supposed final outing, made a third (?!?) Escape Plan movie and signed onto superhero actioner Samaritan, ol' Sly also recently announced that Demolition Man 2 was officially in the works.

Let's get this out of the way first; Demolition Man is awesome. It remains one of the most sorely-underrated action classics of the 90's, but surely the sequel ship has well and truly sailed by now, and the movie doesn't boast the same kind of visibility and reputation as many of its peers from the same time period, making it a much trickier sell to more casual viewers unfamiliar with the original.

Stallone's John Spartan spent 36 years in cryo-stasis in the original, and by the time the follow-up actually gets around to happening almost the same amount of time will have passed in the real world. When Demolition Man 2 gets in front of cameras, the leading man will be at least 75 years old, with his creaking joints a far more likely candidate for demolition that the city of San Angeles.
