10 Upcoming Movie Trailers That Are Probably Tricking You

3. The Character Design Is Better...But The Movie Still Sucks - Sonic The Hedgehog

Paramount dropped the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog back in April, and fans were left absolutely horrified at the unsettlingly humanoid-esque re-design the gaming icon had received.

The trailer was lambasted with an historic number of dislikes, and the studio quickly responded that the character was going to be re-designed ahead of the movie's release, even eventually delaying the film by several months to affect the changes.

And so, the new trailer dropped recently and showed off a decidedly more source-faithful Sonic: his skin tone had been changed, his eyes were wider, his nose smaller, and he basically looked a hell of a lot more like the Sonic we know and love.

The reception online was generally one of pleasant surprise, that a movie studio took drastic steps to listen to fans and fix a potentially movie-derailing miscalculation.

Except, this has created a smokescreen effect of sorts, distracting fans from the fact that, despite the redesign, the core content of the movie will largely be unchanged.

Everything else that seemed lame in the first trailer - namely the cringe-worthy humour - is still likely to be just that. It's certainly a clever, canny PR turnaround on Paramount's part, and is likely to boost the film's box office performance in the long run.

In fact, some tinfoil hat-wearing fans have even theorised that the bad design may have been intentional in order to decisively win fans over with the redesign.

Even ignoring that silliness, Sonic still looks like a fundamentally naff video game movie, though the new design should at least make it somewhat less objectionable.
