10 Upcoming Movies That Are Causing Huge Controversy

Gareth Edwards' new sci-fi thriller The Creator looks absolutely terrific - a truly original, big-budget genre film arriving in an era where Hollywood is more risk-averse than ever.

The gorgeous first trailer dropped back in July, and though online reception was generally positive, things changed when audiences noticed a strange artistic choice in one specific shot.

The visual of Los Angeles being obliterated by an AI-ordered nuclear strike was noted for its odd similarity to widely circulated phone footage of the 2020 Beirut explosion, with the filmmakers having seemingly used the clip as the base for their own VFX-heavily explosion.

This caused observers to criticise the film for repurposing footage of a real-life tragedy which caused over 200 deaths for a fictional blockbuster event, while speculating who was responsible for the decision.

Edwards, studio Disney, and the VFX teams involved with the film have all remained radio silent on the matter since, likely hoping that the controversy dies down prior to the film's September release.

All the same, don't be surprised if this shot is revised or removed entirely before the movie hits cinemas.
