Edson Oda's ambitious directorial debut boasts one hell of a neat concept: in a purgatory-esque locale, a reclusive man named Will (Winston Duke) interviews a number of different souls who are competing for the chance to be born into an actual living, breathing human body.

With its gorgeous Utah setting and killer ensemble cast including Zazie Beetz, Bill Skarsgard, Benedict Wong, and Tony Hale, it's little surprise critics have been lavishing praise on Nine Days since its Sundance bow.

Though existential sci-fi dramas can often bite off more than they're capable of chewing, this effort appears to match its awesome premise with the heart and smarts necessary to satisfy.
