The first golden age of Hollywood horror saw the likes of James Whale delivering movies such as Frankenstein that have endured the passage of time. The second wave of American horror in the '50s might not have quite the same reputation in terms of calibre of production, but if there's one thing that can be confidently said about the post-war B-movies, it's that they're a lot of fun. One of the greats of this period was the 1954 movie The Creature From The Black Lagoon, in which a group of intrepid Amazonian explorers uncover the titular monster while searching for fossils. Utilising state-of-the-art (for its time) 3D technology it is hailed to this day as one of the great horrors of the era and has left a lasting legacy on the genre to this day. This might sound like a good enough reason to leave well alone, but the news that Scarlett Johannson has been approached to play the lead role means that it has real potential for an exciting update. While 3D certainly has its detractors, The Creature From The Black Lagoon could be the ideal formula for making the technology a lot more fun than audiences have come to expect, and it goes without saying the monster effects would be a cut above those seen in the '50s. Scarlett Johansson bringing back the scream queen in style? Sounds perfect. What other upcoming remakes do you think could be better than the original? Why not let us know in the comments below?
