10 Upcoming Summer Blockbusters Doomed To Fail

6. The Lone Ranger

The Lone RangerRelease Date: July 3rd (US), August 9th (UK) Why It's Going To Fail: Various filmmakers have been trying to get a Lone Ranger movie off the ground for years, but to no avail. In early 2007, a deal finally started to materialise to drag it out of development Hell, but finding a director and roping in all the talent took several years. Even once it was all hammered out, in 2011 production was delayed because of "budgetary concerns", eventually being shelved for a few months before finally starting up again in February 2012. With all of these hiccups notwithstanding, the film has a shockingly large $250m budget, which is dangerous at the best of times, but when the material is from the western genre - which performs notoriously badly at the cinema - and without a particularly big built-in audience, it seems like Gore Verbinski and co. might be setting themselves up for a fall. What's more, Depp hasn't made a good film in years; I expect it will fail to make its budget back (despite the Depp appeal) and flop critically.
