10 Upcoming Superhero Movies Hollywood Needs To Stop Pretending Will Happen
5. X-23
In a way, the success of Logan was bittersweet. Though the movie was great, it was a shame that the filmmakers had only been able to nail the character - after two dreadful-to-mediocre attempts - in his final film. While that meant the mutant went out on a high, it no doubt left Fox kicking themselves, wondering how to capitalise on and continue the franchise. They did seemingly have one avenue to go down though: a project based on X-23.
Introduced in Logan, the feisty young mutant was just as bloodthirsty and rage-filled as her father figure, bearing enough of a resemblance that Fox chose her to carry the franchise going forward. Bringing back James Mangold to work on a script, in 2017 the priority was on getting the tone of the film right, with the studio wanting to balance the qualities that made Logan so memorable with a youthful, optimistic energy that better suits the character.
Unfortunately, outside of the business realities of an X-23 movie, it's hard to see the project working from a creative standpoint. Fox already have plenty of X-Men movies in production, including Dark Phoenix, X-Force and New Mutants, and it's difficult to see this character fitting into that world. Logan already splintered the timeline - a timeline which Fox have attempted to make far more cohesive with recent X-Men flicks - making it unlikely that Fox would continue to make things complicated.
