The Ocean's trilogy aside, Steven Soderbergh€™'s films never tend to be fluff, but if there was anything in his filmography that you could guess would be light-hearted it would be Magic Mike. After all, it€™'s a film about titillation and strippers €“ sure it might get a little seedy, but at first glance you think it€™'s probably going be a comedy. And for the most part, it doesn'€™t disappoint €“- as befitting the subject matter, it'€™s appropriately ridiculous.

Even the plot seems light-hearted €“- 19-year-old Adam is taken under Channing Tatum€™s wing and introduced to the fabulous world of male stripping. You probably think it'€™s going to take the normal route €“ - guy learns ropes, guy gets good, guy gets cocky, guy suffers a stumble, guy finds redemption. And for the most part, it did. But then the stumble came, and what a stumble it was.

Namely, Adam gets into deep, deep trouble, developing a drug addiction and racking up a £10,000 debt to the dealers, and Tatum€™s Mike has to use his life savings to save the youngster€™s skin. This leaves Mike extremely depressed, as he leaves the stripping business penniless and unable to follow through on any of the dreams he had for himself.

Basically nobody ends up winning in this ending €“- Adam is probably still addicted to drugs, main villain Dallas is just as much of a tool as he ever was and Mike is pretty depressed. There'€™s an implication that he might get the girl, but still, if you'€™ve come in for a glamorous comedy, you€™'re going to be pretty depressed come film close.
