10 Vintage Film Special Effects That Make A Mockery Of CGI

5. Nazi Face Melting Scene - Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

As previously stated, early €˜80s Steven Speilberg was the king of old-school special effects. With George Lucas in the producer seat, the special visual effects for the first Indiana Jones movie were provided by Industrial Light & Magic. The most memorable (and shockingly vicious) moment of the film came courtesy of the melting of Major Arnold Toht€™s (Ronald Lacey) head. The film used prosthetic face and head masks made out of gelatin, which were then actually melted. The layers in the masks were made to melt in a certain way to create the grisly effects. The film almost received a R-rating (for other equally gruesome scenes) until they made some clever compromises. George Lucas isn€™t exactly known for his restraint when it comes to special effects but Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark still strikes a perfect balance to this day; truly one of the best adventure/action movies ever made.
