10 Vitriolic Films Built On Biting Satire

7. Borat

I Heart Huckabees
20th Century Studios

Borat, released in 2006 and directed by Larry Charles, is the wild tale of the titular fictional journalist who goes to the United States for the glorious benefit of Kazakhstan. As he travels across the nation, we bear witness to his wacky reactions and interactions to all things American.

Viewed through the lens of a seemingly short-minded foreigner, Borat's trip through the most excessive elements of American society is brilliantly presented. The main protagonist is fascinated by the nation, all while failing to realise how artificial and bloated much of its society has become.

As many an audience knows, it was absolutely hilarious and made its leading man into a household name. It does so by striking at the heart of the matter and involving real Americans rather than actors. Cohen was always a sneaky one, able to disguise his movie-making ambitions with unscripted sequences and getting into character fully. As a result, the commentary you see is totally authentic.

Borat has made such a massive impression that Sacha Baron Cohen decided to bring it back over a decade later. The full follow-up: "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" is set for release very soon and will be much more focused on political upheaval and other crises.
