Written and directed Oscar-nominated Indian filmmaker Ashvin Kumar (who also features in the film, too), No Fathers In Kashmir depicts the impact that decades of armed conflict between India and Pakistan has had on Kashmir through the eyes of British-Kashmiri teenager Noor (Zara La Peta Webb), who travels to the area to stay with her grandparents in the hopes of uncovering the truth about her father’s mysterious disappearance.

During her stay she befriends local boy Majid (Shivam Raina) who agrees to help her solve her mystery - his own father having disappeared. However, as they start to find answers, they inadvertently find themselves in the centre of the war that has torn the region apart.

From this point onward, Kumar begins to unpick the complexity of the conflict at hand, highlighting all the heartache and cruelty that has plagued the area alongside the differing moral motivations that are continuing to fuel the fighting.

In spite of how ongoing and severe this conflict has been, it’s one that doesn’t get a lot of attention – especially in cinema. And in this film, Kumar displays what the real-world impact this conflict has had on those living there to frightening effect.
