10 War Films That Dealt With The Consequences

2. The Breadwinner

Rambo Taxi Driver
Universal

A war film unlike anything else on this list, The Breadwinner is a beautifully animated and heartfelt film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Deborah Ellis and executive produced by Angelina Jolie that shows the impact of the Afghanistan war from the perspective of a family living under the Taliban’s ruthless regime.

When her father is unjustly arrested by members of the Taliban who believed he insulted them the previous day, Parvana (Saara Chaudry) and her family are left without the means to provide for themselves as they’re unable to leave their home without a male relative without the threat of being arrested or beaten. To save her family, Parvana cuts her hair and wears her late brother’s clothes to pretend to be a boy. With the help of Shauzia (Soma Chhaya), another local girl posing as a boy, the pair take up various jobs to earn the money they desperately need while Parvana seeks to find the means to get her father out of prison.

Exploring a side of the recent war that’s rarely seen, The Breadwinner deals with tough subjects in poignant and touching ways. If there’s one film from this list to see, it’s this one.
