10 War Films Where Everyone Survives
4. A Hidden Life
Terrence Malick is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and his elegant, naturalistic depiction of someone so committed to their faith and moral beliefs that they'd die for them is absolutely transcendent.
Not only does A Hidden Life rank up there as one of the best films about faith and religion - particularly in how it contrasts the strength of personal theology against the corruption of religious institutions - but it's also one of the greatest anti war films to ever exist.
Focusing on devout Christian Franz Jägerstätter, a man who refused to fight for the Nazis due to his faith and refusal to commit violence, Malick contrasts the rigid concrete spaces that he’s imprisoned in with gorgeous Austrian landscapes, minutes at a time being devoted to the beauty of wind flowing through the trees and animals roaming the countryside.
While death is inevitable, it is never focused on and the loss of life is reflected through the change in the environment itself, watching as it adapts to one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.
