10 War Movie Cliches That Annoy EVERYONE

9. Cliched Squads

Saving Private Ryan War Movie Cliches
Paramount Pictures

A trademark cliche inextricably linked with war movies is that of the archetypal squad. There's nothing inherently wrong with this cliche in itself, but it's been played to death throughout cinema's most celebrated and influential war films. Saving Private Ryan and We Were Soldiers are just a few seminal war offerings that feature familiar squad archetypes, with their character profiles serving as the basis for later squad-driven outings in the vein of David Ayer's Fury.

Every fan of the genre will be familiar with the various "choose your character" options that a war movie squad presents. From devout Christians and soldiers who share a natural affinity with animals, all the way to country rubes missing their mothers and city slickers with tales of girls back home, virtually every stereotypical character mould that one could think of has featured as a squad member in one war movie or another.
