10 War Movie Cliches That Annoy EVERYONE

5. Bootcamp Montages

A long-time staple of war movies, bootcamp montages have become synonymous with the genre. It's a simple concept in itself - an array of footage from basic training set on an army base, typically featuring a drill sergeant howling obscenities as he forces his platoon to run for miles or complete an obstacle course as fast as possible.

There's nothing wrong with a boot camp montage, and it's worth noting that iconic genre staples in the vein of Full Metal Jacket or Jarhead never would have gotten off the ground without one. It's simply been overdone as a narrative device by a litany of war films, to the point that the mere inclusion of one seems cliched at this point in the game.

This may seem like a harsh indictment for one of the genre's tried and tested tropes, but there's nothing to be gained from including a boot camp montage that hasn't been gained already.
