Watching too many movies really IS bad for you.

Though 2017 gave us plenty of films that satisfied our more cerebral cinematic tastes - from thought-provoking fare like Get Out and A Ghost Story to intelligent dramas like Call Me by Your Name - a good number of movies released over the past year haven’t been so beneficial for the old grey matter.

It’s long been said that watching too many movies can be detrimental to our health and there’s no doubt watching these particular films zapped a few of our braincells.

From movie characters making terrible life choices and cack-handed attempts at social commentary to ridiculous historical and scientific inaccuracies and R-rated comedies comprised entirely of juvenile gags, 2017 was truly the year of stupid people watching stupid movies. And those stupid people were us.

If you’ve already seen the movies featured here then it’s likely you’re already down a few IQ points but it’s not all bad news. You’ve made it this far so can obviously still read. Well done!

But if you’d like to avoid losing a few braincells give these 2017 movies a pass. They’re basically the cinematic equivalent of a lobotomy.

10. We Watched Some Pretty Bad R-Rated Comedies

It seems our collective sense of humour didn’t get any more refined or intelligent over the course of 2017 as we spent a good part of the year lapping up lowbrow R-rated comedies brimming with toilet humour and juvenile jokes.

To be fair, the state of comedy in 2017 wasn’t entirely awful. There were some exceptions like Girls Trip – which although R-rated gets a pass because it was genuinely funny, critically acclaimed and gave us some handy grapefruit serving suggestions – and a few indie comedy gems.

But for every Ingrid Goes West or I, Tonya there was a Baywatch or Bad Mom’s Christmas or some other equally unfunny and crude movie like Snatched or Rough Night where two hours of dick jokes pass for comedy.

That doesn't necessarily mean that we want the sort of intellectual jokes you need a degree in quantum physics to understand just maybe a little less reliance on toilet humour in 2018, ok Hollywood?
