Doctor Strange may be a master of the mystic arts, but he still draws a lot of power from one object in particular, the Eye Of Agamotto. Worn on a necklace, this amulet grants him a great deal of spell-casting strength. In the comics, the Eye is an ancient relic that provides wisdom and dispels illusions, but for the films, Kevin Feige has already hinted at some big changes. Citing its powers, Feige spoke to the Eyes ability to manipulate probabilities, and specifically screw around with time. In this case, it doesn't sound like Feige is even trying to conceal the object's true nature as the potential Time Stone. Keeping in the mind that ideas like magic and other dimensions will be bandied about in the film and something as crazy as time-travel fits right in. The Eye Of Agamotto also makes sense for the same reasons the Dark Dimension does: it would tether Strange to the Avengers looming fight with Thanos. giving him a personal stake in that conflict and making him feel like an integral player in the war.
