The solutions to some of the DC Extended Universe's biggest problems could lie in the Multiverse, a collection of infinite Earths which play host to alternate versions of DC Comics' iconic heroes and villains.

The concept of alternate DC worlds was first explored in the classic 1961 storyline Flash of Two Worlds, which threw Barry Allen's Scarlet Speedster and his Earth-Two counterpart Jay Garrick into the mix together.

This paved the way for more inter-dimensional crossovers between different versions of the same characters, until everything got too convoluted. That's when DC decided Earth-Two had to go, and the solution was the epic Crisis on Infinite Earths event of 1985, which merged all of the worlds in the Multiverse into a single universe.

Every character was given a rebooted continuity and a new look, something that could be a godsend for the DCEU. Batman could be recast with a younger actor in the role, and the continuity rejig would wipe the slate clean, allowing the franchise to start over in a different format.

Crisis events have become a tradition for DC over the years, and they always result in major changes to its comic book universe. Infinite Crisis, for instance, saw Lex Luthor recreate Earth-Two and thrust it back into continuity.

By delving into the Multiverse, the DCEU not only has the opportunity to deliver a thrilling crossover movie that transforms the franchise from the ground up, but also introduce new versions of its iconic characters to replace the ones it must retire.
