2. Bring Back Camp
Im not actually suggesting this is a good idea, but perhaps the only possible turn around after Nolans uber-realistic approach is to tone things down a level to the knowing kitsch of both the 60s TV show and Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin. The only other way to go is in the opposite direction by making big-screen Batman even darker, yet its hard to see Warner Bros allowing a director to push the series any further into the boundaries of the essential PG-13/12a rating than Nolan - and an infamous pencil trick - already have. So perhaps the way forward will be toning down the moody realism of Nolans films by returning to a family friendly adventure, in which Jim Carrey can roam free like a hyperactive childrens entertainer and everything is lit with bright pink neon. Ill be honest, a small part of me would love to see Nolans ultra-serious universe completely torn apart by the unstoppable force of camp. Imagine Christian Bales moody glare after being neglected to wearing a perky Bat-nippled costume and delivering lines like Ill get drive-thru, and youve got something unmissable.
