10 Ways To Reinvigorate The Broken Horror Genre

8. More Indie Horror Movies

Kill List There are too many mainstream horror movies following the exact same story beats and failing to be original or scary. However independent directors are willing to forget the rules and make a movie as scary and disturbing as it should be. Ben Wheatley is arguably the best indie horror director at the moment, his films are all uniquely brilliant (Sightseers, A Field in England), particularly his disturbingly memorable Kill List. I won't ruin too much other than to say it is about a hit man who takes a new contract, literally signed in blood. He then has to deal with the weirdness of his victims thanking him and things get a lot weirder from there. The bleak dread filled tone and brutal violence make it disturbing. However it's the ending which will stay with you. Ben Wheatley is just one of a talented bunch. Ti West (House of the Devil and The Innkeepers) and Richard Bates (Excision) are other independent directors making great movies. Now I'm not saying there are no good mainstream horror movies - the James Wan-directed The Conjuring is amazing, nevertheless chances are an independent production will be more willing to disturb and frighten the audience than attempting to start up a new franchise.
