3. Giving Away All The Best Bits
Trailers also will express their complete desperation by showing all the best bits of their film in order to entice you to the cinema. The problem is that this will leave audiences expecting even more in the final film, and if this is the best you have, then it's going to result in tremendous disappointment. Though it didn't really disappoint audiences, Total Recall's trailer certainly risked this; watch it above and see how shamelessly it brandishes a lot of the best gags (namely the "Consider that a divorce" one-liner at the end). While it didn't let all the cats out of the bag, it's best to cut a trailer with just a few awesome zingers and then a few less-awesome ones; otherwise you risk blowing your wad before audiences have even started watching the movie. Comedies are particularly guilty of this; they'll make you laugh enough to get your money, but then that's often all she wrote.
