10 Ways Zoolander 2 Is Everything That’s Wrong With Hollywood

5. It Retreads Jokes We€™ve Heard Before

Speaking of Anchorman 2, another problem that Zoolander 2 shares with that movie is the re-treading of old material. This is a common issue with comedy sequels, as further evidenced by Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Dumb And Dumber To, and pretty much every other Hollywood comedy follow-up of all time. Zoolander 2 does it more often, and with less effectiveness, than most. There€™s a €˜hot right now€™ line for Will Ferrell that doesn't connect like the previous one, boring further instances of €˜looks€™ having magical powers, another silly school name, loads of €˜who am I?€™ moments, €˜really, really, ridiculously good-looking€™, and even an elaborately named trendy refreshment that Derek wants to get (accompanied by a Wham! soundtrack and a car scene that goes wrong). Rejigging all these old jokes only serves to highlight how unfunny the new stuff is. Hearing jokes you loved the first time around interspersed throughout a movie that doesn€™t add any new quotable lines to the pantheon is quite a sad viewing experience. (Again, if they wanted to see how to tackle the sequels-doing-the-same-sh*t-as-before issues head on, Stiller and co. should€™ve looked at 22 Jump Street.)
