10 Weaknesses Of Great Horror Films

8. Unfortunate Zombie Make-Up - Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

The Descent
United Film

Romero's Dawn of the Dead is a near-perfect film. Thoroughly investible heroes, an effective balance of action and suspense, and a healthy dose of social commentary resulted in what is arguably THE definitive zombie movie. One criticism that always crops up, however admittedly nitpick-y it may be, is the zombies' unfortunate coloration. Savini's choice of grey make-up appears a sickly blue on film, which is often distracting and occasionally comical. Both Savini and Romero have since expressed regret in the final outcome of the effect.

That's not to say that the general zombie design in Dawn of the Dead is poor - far from it! Although, in all honesty, the strength of Dawn's zombies largely lies in direction and performance, rather than design. The extras were instructed to get creative with their undead performances, and the result is a delight. In fact, this film probably has the most memorable and entertaining line-up of extras in cinema history. Zombified Roger and Stephen are also fantastic.

With better and more convincing make-up design, these zombies would have been perfect.
