6. Mother! (2017)
In writer-director Daron Aronofsky’s (Requiem For A Dream, Black Swan) critically acclaimed Mother!, a husband (Javier Bardem) and wife’s (Jennifer Lawrence) domestic status quo is uprooted when an unnamed couple (played by Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) arrive at their beautiful, rural home unannounced.
The husband, a poet struggling to write anything, is delighted to have company and encourages their intrusive behaviour. Contrarily, Lawrence’s character grows increasingly agitated as the guests begin to damage the home that she’s worked tirelessly to turn into an Eden for her and her husband.
As the film progresses, her situation becomes increasingly precarious and nightmarish as more people begin to arrive, which only results in more paranoia and destruction. The tension is gradually wound until it explodes into an intense and violent climax which comes to a head when the frenzied mob occupying the home kill and devour Mother’s newborn baby.
Enraged by the transgression, Mother sets the house ablaze, killing the crowd and mortally wounding herself. The husband, who’s left unharmed, uses her heart to create a new house. Another woman wakes in bed the next morning.
Whether understood as an allegory for religion or the godlike arrogance of artists, this ending will spark debate.
