6. Whoopi Goldberg

Speaking of films that have not aged well, it's astounding to recall that Ghost won two Academy Awards - for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay - while also being nominated for, get this, Best Picture. Whoopi picked up a gong for her turn as Oda Mae Brown, a one-note, stereotypical medium largely used for ropey comic relief, but the Academy, apparently not seeing her turn in The Colour Purple as deserving enough, gave her the award for this mulch instead. To rub salt in the wound - as if Ghost's ridiculous five nominations wasn't enough - Goldberg was up against a meaty selection of dramatic roles, fending off Lorraine Bracco, Annette Bening, Mary McDonnell, and Diane Ladd, all of whom would have been far more deserving of the win than her. It's not that the Academy should discriminate against comic roles, but this one was just so broad and uninspired.
