3. The Ladykillers – The Coen Brothers

Steven Spielberg 1941
Touchstoine Pictures

The Ladykillers was a hilarious comedy from the 1950s revolving around a criminal mastermind whose attempts at robbing a bank keep being accidentally thwarted by his elderly landlady.

Normally, people are up in arms when they hear the words "reboot". But when the Coen brothers announced they would be helming the remake of The Ladykillers, things seemed optimistic, since the original's quirky tone felt suited to the directors' style. Considering this adaptation has some hilarious performers, including JK Simmons, Marlon Wayans, and Tom Hanks, the film appeared to be in very safe hands.

But for some reason, what should've been a classic in the making didn't come together. Even though the Coen brothers etch their funniest scenes with clever wordplay and precise writing, this film is hampered by cartoonish jokes involving IBS, a lady's butt, and Tom Hanks mugging into the screen every five minutes. The gags feel so old-fashioned, they would be considered out-of-date if they were used in the original version.

Although the Coens have had a handful of misfires throughout their careers, The Ladykillers feels like a kamikaze mission.
