10 Worst Opening Scenes In Otherwise Perfect Movies

6. Loki Steals The Tesseract - The Avengers

I think we can all agree that The Avengers is a pretty awesome superhero movie - there are very few comic book fans out there whose high expectations weren't met by Joss Whedon blockbuster, which the writer/director managed to render with the perfect blend of action, humour and even heart.

That said, the opening scene of is really, really odd. It might seem like a cop-out of sorts to describe a scene as "plainly off," but that's exactly what the first 10 minutes of this movie feels like - something just isn't quite right about the entire sequence.

So the scene in question has Loki turning up at S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base in order to steal the Tesseract, which basically involves a overtly long and awkward encounter between "Thor's brother" (lame exposition!), Nick Fury and Erik Selvig. None of it is funny or well-written.

It's almost like the scene was shipped in from an episode of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., so flat is the direction and naff are the lines of dialogue. You also feel kind of like you've been thrown into a scenario halfway through; like you're watching the second or third scene in the film.

Thankfully, things pick up straight after this and the rest of the movie plays brilliantly all the way to the end. For a while there, though, Marvel fans would have been right to be panicked.
