10 Worst Practical Effects Movie Monsters
6. Bram Stoker’s Dracula – Bat-Drac
Not content with forcing Keanu Reeves to attempt an accent which to this day defies categorization, Francis Ford Coppola’s film also tried its hand at conjuring up a convincing bat form for its vampire protagonist. In the process the film produced more laughs than anything else.
The rubber suit and elaborate makeup turned Gary Oldman’s count into less of a foreboding terror and more a human embodiment of the phrase ‘bingo wings’. Loose skin aside, the choice is said to have come from Oldman’s insistence that he would not be sufficiently scary without an outfit. Well, kudos to the actor for proving himself wrong—his Dracula is definitely a lot scarier before this school musical tier costume makes an appearance.
Despite this misstep the film isn’t all bad, and it’s well worth a watch if you’re in the mood for some corny gothic horror. Just don’t expect too much from cinema’s least loved incarnation of Batman.
