10 Worst Superhero Movies Of The 2010s
2. Dark Phoenix (2019)
The second attempt to make a movie of the iconic Dark Phoenix Saga, and the second success at buggering it right up. This time even more spectacularly, to the point that Fox were ashamed to put the X-Men name on the main title when it first came out.
The X-Men films have been very hit-and-miss since the series’ debut in 2000. But after the monster hit that was Logan in 2017, the much-delayed Dark Phoenix effectively ended the franchise on a crushing low by learning nothing from the mistakes of X-Men: The Last Stand, and making a film out of obligation rather than passion of the source material.
James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender can give amazing performances in their sleep and here is no different. Everyone else is clearly phoning it in just to get it done, most obviously being Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique who was forced into the last two films and was clearly eager to get her death scene over with so she doesn’t have to suffer through the hours of makeup again.
The story repeats the same beats as previous films, Xavier and Magneto are pitted against each other once again, Magneto comes out of retirement for the 4th time in the series after a tragedy befalls him, big battle followed by anticlimax. But at least they didn’t have to dust of Wolverine again, though it would have been welcome to see him, might have made the film better.
With the Fox-Disney merger it’s likely that this will be the final X-Men film (unless New Mutants finally gets released), and if so, what a limp way to end the once-powerhouse superhero franchise.
