10 Worst Young Adult Novel Movie Adaptations

8. Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events (2004)

An adaptation of The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, and The Wide Window, the first three books in A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. Starring rubberface himself Jim Carrey, the film tells the story of three orphans who are adopted by their distant cousin, a mysterious theater troupe actor named Count Olaf (played by Carrey), as he attempts to steal their late parents' fortune. While the books are enjoyable, the movie turned out to be a fairly unfortunate event indeed. With three books crammed into one film, we found plots being chopped up and stuck back together almost randomly. The film is admittedly visually pleasing, and the artwork at the end credits is very impressive. What brings the film down ultimately is the choice to have Jim Carrey as the villain, who doesn't bring the character to life, he simply does his best Jim Carrey impression throughout. Carrey€™s film prior to this was the Charlie Kaufman scripted love story Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, and it could be argued that he hasn€™t made a great film since.
