95. Spawn (Mark AZ Dippe, 1997)
Wow! A movie adaptation of one of the coolest comic books of the last 50 years! Hell, one of the most violent and original too! Shame they went and got the movie so, so wrong! The Hell scenes are some of the worst CGI you will ever witness and would look outdated on a Sega Megadrive. The soundtrack on the other hand is without doubt one of the greatest of all time. Sticking to the comics original story, Spawn tells the tale of murdered mercenary Al Simmons who returns to Earth after making a deal with the Devil. Stripped of his humanity, Al assumes the guise of a Hell Spawn and is unwittingly forced to do the bidding of his new master. Some excellent casting choices are undermined by a horrific performance from Martin Sheen. If you love Spawn then check out the HBO animated series instead.
94. Dragonball Evolution (James Wong, 2009)
Based on the source material by Akira Toriyama, Dragonball Evolution is considered by many fans to be an embarrassment to the name Dragonball. Hell, it was never going to please everybody, especially with the casting of US Shameless remake cast members in the 2 lead roles and James Marsters as Piccolo. I think Ernie Hudson also appears with only a handful of token East Asian actors making odd appearances to keep the authentic feel to the film. The film focuses on the lie of Goku, a young adult male who is charged with the quest of locating the mythical dragon balls which will grant him unlimited power to defeat the evils of the world. The Dragonball story has been told better in a few straight to DVD movies as well as the awesome animated series. If only Evolution had half the excitement and originality of the Dragonball Z TV show it would have ranked so much higher in the list.
93. Barb Wire (David Hogan, 1996)
Back in the 1990s Pamela Anderson was widely regarded as the sexiest woman alive. When her homemade sex tape was leaked on the internet it only cemented her reputation. As a result of how hot she was at the time someone decided she would be the perfect candidate to play Barb Wire in a live action movie based on the Dark Horse comic of the same name. An inspired piece of casting given her assets but no one seemed to realise that the former Mrs Tommy Lee couldnt actually act - in fact giving her best performance as herself in Borat years later. With all this in mind Barb Wire is a pretty fun movie. Replacing the usual bad ass male with a sexy, ass kicking woman was an inspired decision and with several eye popping sequences where Barb shows.
92. The Spirit (Frank Miller, 2008)
Frank Miller is the man. He writes amazing comic books, can write great screenplays (Robocop 2 anyone?) and has turned his hand to directing with incredible results (Sin City). Unfortunately he fell victim to his own style with this 2009 adaptation of Will Eisners comic series about a dead cop who returns from beyond the grave to fight crime in the big city. A classic case of style over substance and without his co-directing partner Robert Rodriguez, his own indulgences got the better of him. Still it's got Samuel L. Jackson as a bad-ass villain and the likes of Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson strutting their stuff. And well, it's not as bad as Batman & Robin.
91. Man-Thing (Brett Leonard, 2005)
Following the mysterious disappearance of some random hoods in the swamp lands of Florida, a local Sheriff goes in search of answers only to stumble upon an ancient Indian legend about a creature that can set people alight at its very touch. That creature is Marvels Man-Thing - not to be confused with DCs Swamp Thing. Created by Stan Lee and inspiring comic book legends like Neil Gaiman, the Man-Thing movie went straight to DVD and The Horror Channel/Sci-Fi Channel. Differing slightly from the original source material the character of Man-Thing (aka Un-Man) is portrayed as an Indian Shaman (rather than a scientist) who can manipulate the local plant life (yawn) rather than burn people who stand before him and show fear. An intriguing character that could have seriously benefited from a little of that Marvel magic that turned Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk and Spidey into billion dollar franchises.
