2. Avengers: Infinity War

It may be difficult to assess the legacy of Avengers: Infinity War until its sequel - the still untitled Avengers 4 - premieres in 2019, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hail the film’s spectacular array of achievements, or the fact that it stands as a testament to the uniqueness of the world’s biggest movie franchise - the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Simply put, Avengers: Infinity War does what no other comic book movie really has, in that it captures the feeling of going into a comic book store, and partaking in the concluding chapter of a serialised adventure. It doesn’t waste time with introductions, because audiences have come to know the MCU’s characters much the same way those who’ve been reading comics for years have.

A story like Infinity War could only have been told within the MCU, with its 10 years’ worth of history, and that in itself is something quite remarkable. Of course, there are other things that set it apart as Marvel’s best film; the spectacular performances, Josh Brolin’s terrifying rendition of the Mad Titan Thanos, the constant and palpable sense of peril, the chemistry between all of its leads - all coalesce to impart a truly unique experience that must be seen in order to be believed.

Particular praise must be given to Joe and Anthony Russo, who together have directed the three best MCU features in Infinity War, Civil War, and Winter Soldier, and also to writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It’s just Marvel in the purest sense, and that in itself is something truly special.
