BOX OFFICE: 10,000 B.C. takes first place and $35.7 million opening

Roland Emmerich's latest epic 10,000 B.C, the prehistorical C.G.I. wholly mammoth popcorn rip-off of Apocalypto (well kinda?) has grossed $35.7 million for the weekend, around half of what Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow grossed on it's opening weekend in June 2004. Worldwide, the movie is standing on $61 million and when you consider it was made for $100 million, the film should make something of a profit for Warner Bros, even if it had to be saved by the International audience. The film has yet to open in the U.K. which will give it a boost. For those taking note, Mel Gibson's foreign language Apocalypto only made $15 million on it's opening weekend in December 2006, so I think Emmerich should feel pretty proud of himself at this point. We all await his next big "event" movie which we know will be more to the liking of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. You just know that movie is gonna be huge. Elsewhere Roger Kumble'sCollege Road Trip starring Martin Lawrence opened to $14 million which is actually his biggest opening yet surprisingly when you think he did Cruel Intentions and the Cameron Diaz comedy The Sweetest Thing. The Bank Job which was never going to do well in the U.S. took $5.7 million from 1,603 locations to finish 5th for the weekend. Will Ferrell's sporting comedy Semi-Pro is most certainly a flop now after dropping 61% for a now total of $24.8 million. About time too. 1 10,000 B.C.
