11 Actors Who Should Take Over Indiana Jones

7. Joaquin Phoenix

Idris Elba Indiana Jones
Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoneix is one of the most eclectic and unpredictable performers of his generation.

Sometimes he's busy starring in Academy darlings such as Her, Walk the Line, or Gladiator, and other times he's busy being so committed to a project that he's willing to actually go mad for a year and come this close to completely ruining his entire career, just for fun.

He's a wild card in many ways but that's exactly what makes the possibility so enticing.

Phoneix's take on the role would be completely different from that of Ford's and that might just be what the franchise needs. He is a more classical performer than the majority of his peers, who is sure to deliver in terms of sheer performance. Rather than trying to recapture the legacy of Ford, as Solo looks to be doing, Phoneix would take things in a completely separate direction with his performance.

It would also be a nice bit of symmetry with the franchise as a whole, as Joaquin's younger brother, River Phoneix, played a young Indiana Jones in the opening sequence of The Last Crusade. River has tragically passed since then, but having a Phoenix step back into the role would be fitting.
