11 Characters The Hobbit Trilogy Nailed

1. Bilbo Baggins - Martin Freeman

There is nothing Martin Freeman can't do. From John Watson in Sherlock to Lester Nygaard in Fargo, he has delivered some of the greatest characters currently on television. On film he is no different. Freeman has delivered a Bilbo that not only captures every nuance of his character from the books but puts his fellow hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin in the shadow. For a actor that has played so many memorable characters, you don't for a second believe you are watching Martin Freeman the actor. This is Bilbo the hobbit, fully realised on the big screen. There is nothing you can€™t love about Freeman€™s performance. The prim and proper way he greets Gandalf with good morning is lifted straight from the pages of the first chapter, as is the exasperation at the arrival of the dwarves, but it is when he starts his adventure that you fully believe in him. His ability to outwit the trolls and later Gollum, his new-found courage, the strength of his convictions; Freeman nails every nuance of the Bilbo from the book and brings him to life completely. It is a testament to him that Bilbo stands out even over the €™greats€™ like Gandalf and Gollum. Freeman is able to deliver great drama and comedy in equal measure and that makes Bilbo the greatest performance of not just The Hobbit trilogy but Peter Jackson€™s entire cinematic Middle Earth. And there you have ten characters the Hobbit trilogy has got spot on. There is still room to flesh out some of the lesser known dwarves and we won€™t get to see the full extent of Luke Evan€™s Bard until the final film, which is why he has been excluded from this list. One of the greatest things about all the Middle Earth movies is that even the smallest role is delivered with passion and conviction and despite some of the negative reactions to this new trilogy, there can be no denying that it has some of the great powerhouse performances that raised the Lord Of The Rings trilogy to the next level.
