8. The NPH Paradox - Harold & Kumar

The Harold & Kumar franchise is legitimately the most surprising of comedy series: for something with apparently so little brains behind it, and which was basically derived from two minor characters in teen sex comedies, the laughs are plentiful and the characters wholly likeable. One of the funniest recurring jokes introduced Neil Patrick Harris as "himself" - in reality a drug-using, womanizing fictional version of himself - which causes issues when you consider that Harris and Kal Penn both starred in How I Met Your Mother, both as love interests of Robin.

Since Penn played Robin's therapist who helps her come to terms with her feelings for Barney - so without him, Robin would presumably be a completely different character, who didn't learn to suppress her jealousy, which could have destroyed her relationship with Barney completely, and sped up the inevitable tumble back to Ted.
